The Blue Ridge Music Center is kicking off its summer concert series on Memorial Day weekend! Don’t miss a return show with The Steel Wheels, plus The Dan River Girls, at 7 p.m., Saturday, May 27. (Click here to download the season schedule.)
The Steel Wheels have drawn on the traditions of folk music and the sound of Appalachian string bands for more than a decade. Each from Mennonite families, Trent Waglerm, Eric Brubaker, Brian Dickel, and Jay Lapp have developed a notable instrumental and harmonic vocal style steeped in the best traditions of regional music. The performance comes on the heels of their latest release, Wild As We Came Here.
The Dan River Girls open the evening performance. Hailing from a musical family, sisters Fiona, Ellie, and Jessie Burdette, planted roots in classical music when they were very young before embracing traditional music of the mountains, including the tunes of Scottish Highlanders who settled this part of the country. Tickets are $20.
Since 2013, the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation has supported concert programming at the Blue Ridge Music Center in keeping with the nonprofit’s mission to ensure cultural and historical preservation, along with natural resource protection, educational outreach, and visitor enjoyment now and for future generations.
