Doughton Park: Rehab Picnic Area

Doughton Park is a beloved spot on the Blue Ridge Parkway, but it is difficult to enjoy the picnic area here in its current run-down condition. The picnic tables and walkways date back to the 1940s and ’50s and are in severe disrepair. We will fund a rehabilitation of the area to replace tables and address crumbling stonework, flagstone walks, and fire pits.

Doughton Park: Basin Creek Bridge Construction

FUNDED! There's a new bridge on Grassy Gap Trail. In the past, the crossing over Basin Creek was often difficult, with only a long, precarious log spanning the waterway for hikers. Thanks to generous donations to the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation by members of the Piedmont Hiking and Outing Club, a 30-foot bridge now makes the trek safer and more accessible for everyone.

Crayfish Survey

Crayfish may be small, but they can send a big message, telling scientists a lot about the state of the environment in which they live. The southeastern Appalachian Mountains are one of two major crayfish hot spots in the world, yet little research has been done to catalog or understand the varieties of species along the Parkway.

Mountains to Sea Trail: Boone Fork Bridge Construction

FUNDED! Those who hike the section of the Mountains to Sea Trail near Blowing Rock have likely encountered the dangerous and seasonally impassible crossing at Boone Fork Creek. To remedy the problem, the Friends of the North Carolina Mountains to Sea Trail secured a grant of $200,000 to build a pedestrian bridge. The Foundation will provide a match of $50,000 for construction and engineering costs to make this trail linked to the Blue Ridge Parkway a safe and enjoyable hike. Construction will begin on this project in early 2016.

Rock Castle Gorge Bioblitz

Rock Castle Gorge is a significant biological area along the Blue Ridge Parkway, but much of these 3,600 acres in the Plateau District have yet to be explored. To survey the diverse array of flora and fauna, the Foundation will support a bioblitz, which will bring together leading scientists and volunteers to survey the various taxa. The result will be a clearer picture of the environmental significance and needs of this intriguing area.

The Foundation will provide funds for a trailer that will transport this equipment to sites in need of attention.

Hemlock Preservation: Tree Treatment

FUNDED! The Blue Ridge Parkway’s old growth Carolina hemlock trees, a rare endemic species, and eastern hemlocks are at serious risk due to the hemlock woolly adelgid. Hemlock is the dominant species in many Parkway forests and its demise would result in cascading effects to other species such as migratory birds and aquatic resources.

This funding will maintain certifications and skills to improve medical response capabilities and pre-hospital care for injured persons within the boundaries of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Printing of the Parkway Strip Maps and Outdoor Guides

Since 2006, the Foundation has provided funding to print the Blue Ridge Parkway Strip Map and the Blue Ridge Parkway Outdoor Guide, both indispensable resources for visitors. These items are updated and reprinted annually through the US government's printing office. The National Park Service provides 50,000 copies to the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is supplemented by Foundation funds to print an additional 100,000 of each item, which will be distributed through visitor centers along the Parkway.

Replace Worn and Damaged Wayside Interpretive Panels *

Many of the fiberglass embedded interpretive panels along the Parkway are badly worn, cracked, faded or damaged. Four panels in each of the four districts that are in most need of replacement will be identified and will be reprinted on a newer, more durable material. * This project will only be undertaken if public or private funds can be found to offset the cost. To donate to help make this project a reality, please use the "Donate Now" link found on this page.

Blue Ridge Parkway Communications Center Building

The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation provided funding for a new Communications Center Building for the Blue Ridge Parkway which opened in the spring of 2012. The building, located behind park headquarters in Asheville, serves as the hub for all radio communications for the Parkway. At the same time, the 30-year old microwave communications system was replaced with a state-of-the-art microwave and land mobile radio infrastructure, giving the Parkway a modern and reliable radio telecommunications network that will provide critical support for visitors and staff for many years to come.
