These four venerable musicians mix new and vintage old-time tunes, and fittingly throw in some Red Clay Ramblers tunes for good measure. Bill Hicks, Jim Watson, and the late Tommy Thompson founded the Red Clay Ramblers in 1972. Mike Craver joined in 1973. For the next decade these talented musicians toured extensively in the United States and abroad; acted and played in two Off-Broadway shows, and released eight albums. In the early ’80s, Watson, Craver, and Thompson released a highly acclaimed album of Carter Family songs titled Meeting in the Air. Co-founder and banjo player Thompson passed away in early 2003 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Hicks (fiddle), Watson (mandolin) and Craver (piano) left the band by 1986, but have gathered together in a new incarnation with Joe Newberry on banjo and vocals.
