For more information, contact: Houck Medford , Executive Director hmedford@brpfoundation.org Moses Cone Gets 21st Century Examination The College of Fine and Applied Arts of Appalachian State University and the Planning Division of the Blue Ridge Parkway have recently collaborated on a project to better understand practical alternatives for the future of Moses H. Cone Memorial Park. Gary Johnson, Chief of Planning and Professional services for the Blue Ridge Parkway, and Chad Everhart, AIA of Appalachian’s Department of Technology have used a talent pool in the schools design curriculum to consider alternatives to approaching the design and site orientation of a possible new visitor’s center at Moses H. Cone Memorial Park. Mr. Johnson states, “this has just given us a different way of looking at things; the students were excited about having a practical project to apply to a current day challenge.” The National Park Service is conducting an in depth examination of the Moses H. Cone Memorial Park which will prescribe alternatives for future management as part of its “Developed Area Management Plan” project. Appalachian State University has become an important collaborative partner in assisting the Parkway on a number of projects studying both the natural resources and cultural resources of the estate. The student projects will be used in refining alternatives that will be presented in a formal report later by the National Park Service. The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation, the Parkway’s professional fundraising partner, is providing funds for the management plan study.
