The Competition provides an opportunity for amateur and professional photographers to showcase their work in varying categories: adventure, culture, environment, flora/fauna, landscape, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. This is the fourth year for the annual competition. Banister Pope, an artist from Boone, won the first place prize of $400 with his photograph entitled The High Road. Pope described his piece in a High Country Press article as having a “‘dreamy’ quality… evocative of [his] own thirty-year romance with the Parkway.” He hopes to spark similar sentiment in others through his work. Travis Goodwin, a 19-year-old freshman at Appalachian State University, claimed second place and $250 with his entry entitled Night Ride. His interest in photography has developed in the past two years, and he uses the Blue Ridge Parkway as inspiration for many of his photographs. “I enjoy the challenge of figuring out how I can put my thoughts and feelings into a form that everyone can see,” says Goodwin. Stefan Olson won the third place prize of $100 with his entry Equilibrium. A Watauga County native and technical photography major at ASU, Olson incorporates his travels in the mountains of Utah and Colorado into his photography by “focusing on the natural formations of the land and the types of animals and plants that inhabit [the] area.” “Equilibrium was taken in a pasture close to the Bamboo exit,” says Olson. “The total range of the photograph emphasized the equilibrium of sky and field.” All of these photographs, along with all entries in varying categories, will be displayed at the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts on the Appalachian State University campus (423 West King Street, Boone, NC) through June 2. The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation provides essential private support for vital enhancement projects that would otherwise go unfunded, placing a special focus on the enrichment of children. The Foundation works independently of federal budgets to assure that the traditions and beauty of the Blue Ridge Parkway can be fully realized and shared by everyone.
