MORE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
I
have been lucky but there has also been good personal planning. I made
a determination twenty years ago that if an opportunity became available
for me to change careers, and I wanted to, that I would do it. Fortunately,
my former vocation in health care has made that possible; and the administrative
experience as a health care provider, a teacher, a business man, and a
civic leader has been a direct commodity transfer to non-profit management
and fund development. I work without financial compensation as a full
time director; however, there are dividends which are more than compensatory.
The wonderful people I have met and become friends with has been an unexpected
reward. The best of all is the opportunity to be directly involved with
one of the greatest natural and cultural resources of this country -- The
Blue Ridge Parkway.
I
want to praise the administration of the Blue Ridge Parkway -- I am impressed
by their leadership and their dedication to its mission. My wife "K.B."
and I have been working for more than a couple of years as volunteers
with the National Park Service in their VIP or Volunteer-In-Parks Program.
We have worked with rolled up sleeves and muddy levis in the field and
sat in business suits at the conferences table strategically for the future.
The Parkway staff has demonstrated excellent talent; this is one of the
best working relationships that I have ever enjoyed.
The Board of Trustees are excited about the Foundation's and Parkway's
future and we invite you to become involved, if you are not already. The
Foundation is fortunate to have its basic overhead costs like rent and
telephone covered by generous corporate support. This means that your
contribution will make a difference; because it goes directly to Parkway
programs and projects---ones that will make a difference in your quality
of life---and ones that the Parkway could never fund on its own.
See you on the Parkway!
- Dr. Houck M. Medford, Executive Director
