Reports to the Executive Director
Position Summary:
The primary responsibility of the Director of Development is to devise and execute strategies that lead to achieving the fund raising goals established by the Board of Trustees. The Director of Development is responsible for planning, developing, and implementing the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation (BRPF) fund raising activities, including establishing and maintaining effective relationships with Foundation constituents. Working closely with the Executive Director, Finance and Development Committee and other foundation staff, the Director coordinates efforts to acquire, retain and upgrade gifts.
Specific Responsibilities:
• Plan, administer, and implement fundraising activities of the BRPF.
• Manage the BRPF development activities in a fiscally sound manner by ensuring that the appropriate systems and procedures are in place to support fundraising goals.
• Assist in the development of annual and long-term fundraising plans, including research, outreach, tracking, and acknowledgement strategies and systems.
• Create a comprehensive, broad-based plan for the BRPF's Annual Fund that addresses 1) timing of specific mailings, 2) appropriate and effective segmentation for mailings and 3) fundraising messages/themes.
• Implement overall fundraising strategies , acquisition and retention of donors to all annual funds, as well as identifying and maximizing possible combined gift opportunities.
• Coordinate direct mail campaigns, which includes preparing and receiving lists; determining ask amounts; writing solicitation letters; and developing marketing materials.
• Devise and conduct cultivation and solicitation plan that: 1) targets BRPF Annual Fund donors/prospects for specific purpose of upgrading gifts to the annual fund and 2) includes personal visits and personal asks.
• Provide input on grant proposals/funding requests or coordinate writing with other staff
• Attend Foundation meetings as necessary- so as to maintain an understanding of the BRPF's goals and work plan.
• Work with staff to develop a comprehensive tracking system that provides statistical information regarding success and cost effectiveness of solicitation activities, especially mail campaigns, including response rates and average gift amounts by segmentation for event mailing.
• Prepare a quarterly BRPF Annual Fund summary- and projections report, and other reports as may be required by the Executive Director.
• Coordinate public relations and marketing activities related to the BRPF fund raising which includes, but is not limited to the Honor Roll Giving, website development, and magazine articles as appropriate.
• Refine and manage the matching gift process to ensure the BRPF receives all eligible matching gifts.
• Ensure that all donors are appropriately thanked and receive regular communication by making donor stewardship a priority throughout the BRPF.
• Recommend items of interest to current and potential donors for inclusion in BRPF materials (newsletters, brochures, etc.).
• Work closely with the Executive Director to identify current and potential National Park Service relationships for annual support.
• Manage constituency concerns as they pertain to the BRPF fund raising activities.
• Prepare and conduct public presentations for groups appropriate to BRPF objectives.
• Assist in publication of the Foundation's journal, The Scenic.
• Perform other duties as may be assigned.
Education, Skills and Qualifications:
This position requires a minimum of a bachelor's degree, preferably in marketing, communications or public relations. A minimum of three years or more years of previous experience in giving, development, marketing or public relations is desired. Preference will be given to candidates with background in non-profit organizations. Individual must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, planning, managerial, and interpersonal skills. Word processing skills are required, including Microsoft Office and a basic familiarity with desktop publishing, database management, web page management and spreadsheets.
High levels of accuracy, creativity, productivity and initiative are required. Individual must demonstrate a high degree of professionalism and the ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and problem solve. Individual must also be able to maintain confidentiality, work well with others, handle pressure and manage multiple tasks. Individual must demonstrate the ability to work with all diverse constituencies.
