ON THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY- HELP NEW FRIENDS ENJOY A DAY IN THE PARK! Eastern National is a private non-profit organization created in 1947 to provide educational materials to park visitors in cooperation with the National Park Service. We provide staffing and park-focused retail sales outlets in park visitor centers. Profits from the sale of books and other items are returned to the parks to further interpretive programs and services, and to support park research. On the Blue Ridge Parkway, Eastern employees work in twelve visitor centers to provide as much as 60% of Parkway visitor contact and almost 1,000 park-approved theme-related educational products. We work closely with park interpreters to evaluate and select these items for their potential to enhance visitors’ experience and understanding. This is a great source of pride to the park and Eastern employees. Sales of these items create a direct cash donation to the Parkway of more than $40,000 annually, and support interpretation and park development programs such as research, facilities improvement and publication of special products to share parks’ most important messages. Eastern National Store Associates work independently or with park rangers or volunteers (after training input from both Eastern and local park personnel) to open and close visitor centers, transact sales, replenish merchandise, and complete financial duties, while also providing information about the Parkway and adjacent communities to visitors. Employees typically work weekends to handle heaviest visitor traffic. Most Eastern National positions on the Parkway are seasonal (May 1 through October 31) in reflection of the park’s weather and visitation patterns. Store Associate starting wage is $5.69 per hour, with opportunities to qualify for a generous benefits program after 1,000 hours of employment. Employees are eligible for a 15% discount on purchases at any Eastern National facility, and at many other national parks as well. EOE/M/F/D/V.
