The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation is the primary and professional fund raising organization for the 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway in western Virginia and North Carolina. The Foundation's authority to request and receive funds on behalf of the Blue Ridge Parkway is vested in a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service and Department of Interior. While the President has proposed a federal budget for 2008 that would increase funding for the National Parks by $258 million, the Blue Ridge Parkway still faces a significant deficit. However, the operational budget is overwhelmed by basic needs, like employing Park staff who provide information to the public and work with Parkway communities and employing maintenance staff who mow the grass, clean the restrooms, take care of the infrastructure and make minor repairs.
